What to eat on your first day in Japan.
We arrived at Narita around 3:00pm Thursday. The food we had on our plane trip was not enough and we wished we brought some snacks with us. We had to convert our Japan rail pass at the airport before taking the train from Narita to Tokyo. We got to our ryokan at Asakusa past 5:00 and after resting for few minutes decide to scout for a good place to have dinner.
The area where we are staying for the night at Asakusa is tourist friendly. Lots of places to eat. From Mister donut shop, to small Japanese restaurant, to curry shop. The even have Denny's across the street next to Fox department store. We really want something to make up for the lousy airline food we had for the past 13 hours. We saw this sushi place and when we took a peek at the door, it seems the place was half full. It was still early and we thought that it is a good sign. We were seated at the bar and the sushi chef greeted us. The waiter knew we needed an English menu and we were give two, one with pictures of the sushi dishes served. We ordered green tea to start. We decided on getting the set menu, one plain set with tuna and a combination set for our second set. Lager beer seems to be a good accompaniment so we ordered Japanese beer. We were so glad we came here. The sushi were filling and taste so good.
Unlike back home, wasabi would be served on a small plate. In Japan, the chef would add the wasabi and you only need to dip your sushi in soy sauce, if you wish. The sliced ginger are on small containers in front of you together with the soy sauce. You can take as much as you can. Another difference on how sushi is served.
We did enjoy our first dinner in Tokyo. The sushi set has uni(sea urchin) which was not fishy at all, ikari(salmon roe)which I did not try, nigiri(squid)which is a bit chewey as expected, unagi(grilled eel) our favorite, sardines which is really good according to my daughter, cooked shrimp which tasted like shrimp, regular tuna and the toro, the fatty cut of tuna, which is really good, some white fish and something else(next to the shrimp) which I had that I totally enjoyed because of the crispy addition which I have no idea what it is. Each piece was mouthful and every bite was an adventure. Nothing I can say but everything is really good. I know I am coming back here for more.
