My window herb garden

For starters, I bought basil, rosemary, cilantro, sage, oregano and parsley.

My new place of work is right next to Union Square and every New Yorker knows that once or twice a week, there is the farmers' market. Actually, I was told that farmers/vendors come on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Back then, whenever I am in the area, I would get curious at what type of food are sold at the Union Square Farmers' Market. Organic seems to be the theme of the goods sold here. That means that prices are a bit steep but the produce are good for ones health and well being. No fertilizers, no pestisides. For me, what is important is that the produce are fresh and taste much better than those in the regular grocery.

There are home made jams and jelly, cheese made from milk from cow, goat and sheep, seafoods, fresh eggs, homemade fruit juices and most important, are the organic fruits and vegetables. I should not forget the artisan bread. Plants and flower are also available as some farmers find that sales from these plants and flowers are a good source of income that can supplement their income from their sales from farm produce.

For me, it just seems practical to buy these herb plants, as most of the time, when I buy these herbs, I probably need only a small amount. Most of it goes to waste. This scenario is very common to someone who likes to cook with fresh herbs. At the end, the cost per use is really expensive, if I can make a conclusion. So, let me experiment and see how my herb garden grows and I will write about the meals I can prepare from them. Good luck to me.....

Blueberry Smoothie

Frozen blueberry, yogurt, milk and a little bit of sugar is all you need to create this delicious sweet concoction.

I had this smoothie for breakfast.

Strawbery dipped in Chocolate

For the chocoholics, this is the ultimate. It is not hard to do but it takes a lot of patience and finger licking.

I followed this recipe omitting the chili powder. Fortunately, I had Girardelli chocolates and heavy cream in my pantry. I wanted my strawberries to be 80% - 90% covered by chocolate. Once the chocolate had dried, it is best to consume them as they don't taste as good after chilling in the refrigerator.

Boston Seafood

Before heading back to New York, my friend and I decided to pass by Boston so she can visit her kids. Naturally, we need to try their famous seafood dishes. We went to this popular No Name restaurant, situated in a renovated fish market by the pier.

I had the seafood platter served with french fries and coleslaw. I had a taste of the seafood soup which goes well with the buttered bread which my friend ordered. My friend had the clam sandwich served with tartar sauce and coleslaw.

At the Quincy Market, I had Italian gelato - Ingles supressa.

After the shopping we stopped at Stepanies's on Newbury for light snack. We shared the baked spinach and arichoke dip with baked lavash chips and pitcher of Sangria. (sorry forgot to take pictures)

At the end of the day, we had dinner with the kids. I had the crabcake salad with goat cheese with a glass of beer.

Sackets Harbor

Sackets Harbor, about 68 miles from Syracuse, New York, is one of the 14 Heritage areas in New York state.

Sackets Harbor is best known for its prime water locations on the northeastern edge of Lake Ontario. This charming village packs a lot of living in a tiny, tidy bundle, decorated with a beautiful waterfront, welcoming restaurants, entertaining and exciting activities and a rich history.

We ate at this place called Tin Pan Gallery. Dining al fresco was enhanced by the live entertainment. The food was superb. I had the penne in lobster sauce which was really so filing I skipped the appetizer. My pasta dish was appropriately paired with a glass of  Zinfandel.

Cooking for friends

Cassava cale

Paella

For two weeks my friend and her family got a taste of my cooking. Some of the dishes I cooked:
  1. Tilapia cooked in coconut milk
  2. Dinuguan
  3. Green beans and kalabasa with shrimp cooked with coconut milk and bagoong
  4. Pancit palabok
  5. Lumpiang shanhai
  6. Paella
  7. Grilled tilapia with ginger, tomatoes and onions
  8. Inihaw na talong with bagoong
  9. Paksiw na tilapia with eggplant and siling haba
  10. Cassava cake
We also had a chance to eat out. We tried this Thai fusion restaurant in Syracuse named Lemongrass, Dinosaur Ribs, a famous place known for it barbeque sauce, also in Syracuse and at Tin Pan Gallery in Sackets Harbor.

That was a lost of eating for two weeks, do you not agree?

Is it just a hobby or a start of home business?

Strawberries are huge, juicy and cheap during the summer . This gave me the inspiration to create something I've not tried ever before. I do not have the tools and equipment for canning. However, I've kept the old preserve jars. Looking for the pectin was another thing though. The closest grocery by me does not carry such things. I have to go to a bigger one and finding it was still not an easy chore. Getting the ingredients was the first step. I now need tools which I need and although everything is available online, total cost could add up because of the shipping charges. Fortunately, after a week or so, I made a trip to Oswego where canning bottles and equipment are readily available, otherwise, I may have been forced to pay for shipping fees.

For those who will have the opportunity to get a free sample my strawberry preserve, I have one request. Can you please save the bottles. hehehehe Hey, it is not as if you paid for it.

For the recipe in creating your own strawberry preserves, you can use this recipe. I tried two versions. I wanted to replicate the strawberry jam available in Bagiou where the fruits are kept whole. The procedure is a bit different as you need to macerate the berries for at least two days out of the fridge. The other version require that the fruits be crushed and cooked in sugar, lemon juice, and pectin.

I have read that canning has grown in popularity in New York City. Check this article from New York Times.

Katz Deli

Katz Deli has always been a popular tourist destination.  Their sandwich had always impressed meat lovers.

I anticipated the meat to be piled mile high but that was not so. Still the sandwich was more than enough for one person, my daughter and I decided to share. The pickles were delicious and they are free.

Also know as the place where the movie "Harry met Sally" was shot. I've always wanted to try the pastrami sandwich, after all I've been in New York for 23 years.
